Des Moines Police Capt. Dave Huberty says a generator was being used Sunday to power the Lord Revival Center Church of God in Christ. He says the fumes flowed back into the building as the children and teens practiced for about three hours. Huberty told The Des Moines Register that no serious symptoms had been reported by late Sunday.

Sunday, November 22, 2009

Hunters are donating more venison to strapped food banks as Ohio and other states offer financial aid aimed at managing high deer populations. It's a much-needed boost for pantries struggling to meet rising demand. The national food bank association Feeding America has seen demand for help more than double at some food banks. The Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks says the number of people served by its member charities was up 37 percent in the fourth quarter ending June 30, compared with the previous fourth quarter. Groups like Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry and Safari Club International have promoted venison donations to pantries in Ohio and other states, but processing and packaging costs deter hunters, especially in tough economic times.

Report: Ill. Residents from the seven-county area surrounding the Thomson, Ill, prison would be "excellent candidates" for up to 1,400 of the jobs generated in the deal's first year, according to the report by the president's Council of Economic Advisers. The report comes as officials from the federal Bureau of Prisons and the Illinois Department of Corrections toured the facility Saturday, along with Democratic lawmakers from Illinois and Iowa.

Rhodes Scholars Named For 2010

The 32 American students chosen as Rhodes Scholars for 2010, listed by geographic region: District 1: William J. Perhaps coach Gary Pinkel finally found the right motivational strategy for a team light on experience. The Tigers (7-4, 3-4 Big 12) enter their regular-season finale against Kansas in Kansas City with momentum after beating Iowa State 34-24 on Saturday. They overcame a seven-point halftime deficit and then pulled away from a fourth-quarter tie. After Missouri ended its three-game home losing streak, a relieved Pinkel was in a joking mood. Maybe, he mused, he hadn't lost his touch after all. More late failures, though, and somebody else will be fielding questions at the postgame news conference.

Savings From Change In Meal Policy Hard To Measure

Iowa lawmakers this year changed the way they reimburse state employees for meals, but it isn't yet clear whether the moved has saved any money. Starting July 1, state employees who travel for work have to submit receipts for their meals. In the past, employees got set amounts for each meal, regardless of how much they actually spent. Last year, the state paid almost $4.8 million in meal reimbursements.

Senate Confirms 2 New US Attorneys For Iowa

The U.S. Senate has confirmed a private lawyer and federal prosecutor as Iowa's next U.S. attorneys. The Downtown Association board of directors has asked the City Council to ban soliciting for donations from the entire Pedestrian Mall, keep those who ask for money farther away from downtown businesses and attractions, and require solicitors to register with the city. The organization, which has more than 60 members, also wants to keep the Pedestrian Mall smoke-free during the day and early evening.

Work Beginning On Burlington Church

Work will soon be under way on reconstructing the charred remains of the historic First United Methodist Church building and remodeling the neighboring Stoermers building.
