Wet Weather Extends Road Work In Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ― Iowa's road construction season has been extended at least through Thanksgiving as crews play catch-up because of wet weather.

Fueled by federal stimulus dollars, this is record calendar year for highway projects in Iowa. Spending will approach $600 million, about 50 percent higher than the $400 million spent in a typical year.

Road work usually slows with the arrival of colder weather in November, but many contractors are behind schedule because of heavy rains in August and October.

John Smythe of the Iowa Department of Transportation says contractors are pushing to complete about $75 million in work on Iowa's primary and interstate highways. About $523 million is finished.
