Child Dies Despite Heroic Actions Of Neighbors

HUGO, Minn. (WCCO) ― The Prindle family was on the first floor of their home when the storm sent their 2-year-old boy flying out of the house.

Looking at the devastation, it's hard to believe anyone survived the storm. Marv Miller ran into the mess when he heard a man screaming for help.

"The dad we found, the daddy was partially buried. We uncovered him, he had a broken leg and broken hip. We carried him out," said Miller. "He was ecstatic. He was just screaming, 'My children, find my children, help me.'"

So began the search for 2-year-old Nathaniel Prindle and his 4-year-old sister Annika. Winds were blowing the house out toward a nearby swamp. Miller and two other men waded into the three foot deep water.

"All three of us jumped in the swamp and we found him in the swamp and we pulled him out of the swamp and started giving him CPR for 15-20 minutes, seemed like forever," recalled Miller.

Nathaniel later died.

"They are certainly grieving. It is a shock to us all" said Tod Hansen, a relative of the Prindle family.

The Prindle family is also focused on 4-year-old Annika. According to her uncle, she is in stable condition after being revived by medics Sunday night. Miller said they had found her underneath a wall when they were going through the house.

Miller said as he was going from house to house, others yelled at him urging him to stay out of the houses because they could smell a gas. The fear was not only of structural collapse, but that a spark could ignite a gas leak, causing an explosion.
