The National Weather Service rates the tornado that tore across Mahnomen County last Friday as EF1, with wind speeds of 100 to 115 mph.
The tornado cut a diagonal path of 26 miles, knocking down trees and power lines and flipping farm equipment. It missed populated areas and caused only scattered damage to homes and outbuildings.
Sheriff Doug Krier chased the twister, relaying its location to his office and the weather service. He says he had to chase sightseers to safety.
Krier says the tornado zigzagged cross-country and several times it appeared headed toward the town of Mahnomen, but he says "we got lucky."
