Authorities are asking Minnesotans to be careful of thin ice on rivers, ponds, creeks and lakes.
Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek says parents should be especially careful with young children, as most fatal ice accidents involve youngsters.
In Hennepin County, more than half of all ice-related fatalities in the past 30 years have involved children under age 18.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says no ice in Minnesota is consistently 4 inches thick, which officials recommend for walking.
Authorities also say owners should make sure to keep dogs on a leash to prevent them from venturing onto unsafe ice.
