Heavy Snow Making PM Commute Tough

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― Several spinouts and crashes were reported across the Twin Cities metro area as another snowstorm hit central and northern Minnesota Tuesday afternoon.

Snow was making the evening commute tough in the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Department of Transportation said difficult driving conditions were reported across the Twin Cities and much of central and northern Minnesota.

WCCO-TV meteorologist Chris Shaffer said the snow will be ending in the next hour across the Twin Cities, as it continues to move to the southeast. It has already stopped snowing in St. Cloud and locations further west.

Strong winds will be a concern this evening, which will cause blowing and drifting snow, Shaffer said. Winds will be from the north-northwest at 15-20 mph, before dying off after midnight.

In northern Minnesota, wind chills will be a concern as well. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for areas near Brainerd and further north. Wind chills in those areas are expected to be minus 20 to minus 40 overnight.

In the Twin Cities, actual temperatures will drop below zero overnight, with wind chills from minus 10 to minus 20. Cold sunshine will rule for New Year's Eve, but more light snow is expected on Thursday.

Some places saw more than a foot of snow from today's storm. While 1-3 inches of snow was typical across the metro area, North Branch, Minn. got 11 inches of snow, Rice Lake, Wis. got more than 12 inches of snow, and Rush City, Minn. got 14.5 inches of snow, the NWS said.
