Snow Headed For Southern Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ―

A heavy snow warning has been issued for southwestern Minnesota and a snow advisory has been issued for much of the rest of the southern part of the state.

The alerts go into effect overnight tonight and last through Thursday.

WCCO-TV meteorologist Chris Shaffer said it will start snowing in southwestern Minnesota around midnight and will spread across southern Minnesota through the early morning hours.

At 11:30 a.m. the newest models showed the storm track shifting further south than originally predicted.

Shaffer believes the heaviest snow will be in the southwestern part of Minnesota, around the Worthington area, where 4-8 inches of new snow could fall.  Isolated areas could see 10 inches of snow.

Areas to the south and west of the Twin Cities can expect to see 2-6 inches of new snow.  Shaffer thinks the Twin Cities will see a trace to 2 inches of new snow, with more falling in the southwest metro.

The snow should move out of Minnesota by early Friday morning.

Saturday looks mostly sunny, with increasing clouds as the day goes on.  Highs should be around 40, but it will be windy.  There is a chance of mixed precipitation overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning.

Shaffer said he doesn't see any big storms for next week, but temperatures will remain below average.  By Tuesday, the average high temperature in the Twin Cities is 50.  Temperatures for the month of March have been 4.2 degrees below average.
