Snow started falling in parts of western and southern Minnesota overnight, including in parts of the Twin Cities metro area.
WCCO-TV meteorologist Chris Shaffer said the colder air arrived on Thursday, and highs over the weekend will only reach the high 30s.
Thursday night, rain showers mixed with and then changed to wet snow showers in western Minnesota.
The Twin Cities metro area will escape any snow accumulation on Friday but there could be flurries.
"The ground is too warm so any snow hitting the ground will melt on contact," Shaffer said.
Further west, along the border with the Dakotas, 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected to fall, with near-blizzard conditions overnight in parts of North Dakota and South Dakota.
Mixed rain and snow showers will continue through the day Friday, changing back to all snow showers Friday night.
Windy conditions will continue Friday and Saturday ranging from 10 to 20 mph, but by Sunday things will calm down.
