No More Snow Emergency Phone Calls In St. Paul

ST. PAUL (AP) ― The city of St. Paul will end its practice of calling residents to notify them of snow emergencies.

People who signed up for the calls could get a heads up about moving their cars off city streets to make way for plows. But city officials say the system never resulted in fewer parking tickets being issued during the snow emergencies.

Public Works director Bruce Beese says the system costs the city about $50,000 year. He says the information in the notification system will still be used to announce street projects.

But this winter, the city will instead focus on using media outlets to announce snow emergencies. The city will also contact residents by e-mail and post snow emergency alerts on its Web site.
