The Tuesday evening commute proved to be a tough one for drivers across Minnesota.
Although traffic was lighter than usual, crashes were up. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, there were 12 personal-injury accidents and 78 property-damage crashes in the Twin Cities metro area during the afternoon.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation extended its hours for the day and night shift plows. City and state crews hit the roads last night, in anticipation of the 13th snow storm of the year.
Mike Kennedy, the Director of Winter Operations for the city of Minneapolis, said this December has been challenging because it seems to snow 1-2 inches every 1-3 days.
"It is taxing financially, with resources and materials," he said.
He said the 2008 budget is essentially complete, but worries about 2009. Next week, his group plans to meet to discuss possible changes in snowplowing operations. He said he's concerned because the snow removal funds come from the city's general fund, which will be hurt by cuts by Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Tuesday it snowed between 1 and 2 inches in the Twin Cities but more than a foot or more across central Minnesota. Cambridge had 9.5 inches and St. Cloud 5.4 inches.
According to the National Weather Service, this will be third snowiest December for Rochester, the fourth for St. Cloud and not even in the top 10 for the Twin Cities.
