Red River Forecast At 36 Feet By Thursday

Slideshow: Flooding In Red River Valley

FARGO, N.D. (AP) ― A forecast of the Red River's fall at Fargo now has the river in safe territory earlier than expected.

The river was just a shade above 38 feet at midday Tuesday. The latest National Weather Service estimate shows it falling to 37 feet by Wednesday night and 36 feet by Thursday morning.

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker has said he'd feel good with the Red at 36. Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., have been on high flood alert for days.

National Weather Service hydrologist Mike Lukes says forecasters predicted the faster fall based on what they've seen in recent days. Lukes says the cold temperatures are continuing to limit additional water entering the Red River.

The river is expected to rise again and have a second crest in mid-April.
