Strong Winds Topple Trees, Power Lines In Medford

MEDFORD, Minn. (WCCO) ― Strong winds caused lots of damage in Medford Thursday morning, toppling trees and power lines. No one was hurt but the town was without power for most of the day as crews worked to clean up debris and downed lines.

Jacki Butler watched volunteer firefighters use their heavy equipment to shove her fallen maple tree out of the street and back into her yard. Strong winds ripped the tree out of the ground while Jacki was at work in Owatonna. She was grateful no one was hurt.

"It's always unfortunate to lose trees but certainly there's a lot more devastation with the airport accident. Trees can be replaced," said Butler.

Last time a storm toppled one of her trees, she turned the trunk into a pond in her backyard. Butler may do that with her latest storm-devastated tree.

All over town, crews worked quickly to clear away fallen trees and heavy branches. While her husband pitched in with that work, Linda Dusek watched their children play in the yard.

"It is a good community. We all work together. We all help one another so we'll pull though," she said.

Dusek said her children were frightened to have to go down to the basement when the winds ripped through town Thursday morning.

By afternoon, they were having fun playing on the toppled tree which crushed the fence in the family's backyard. Five-year-old Cole couldn't be happier with the big tree stretched across his play area.

"It is awesome. Like a jungle," said Cole.
