Neighbors Pitch In For Tornado Recovery

HUGO, Minn. (WCCO) ― Throughout the difficult days following the devastating tornado in Hugo, people could be seen doing whatever possible just to keep others' spirits up.

Houses and ponds, cars flipped and stuck on their sides, it's horrible," said Joe Rainer.

When Rainer saw two twisters, he started riding his bike toward them. His reward was grapefruit-sized hail on his head.

"It blew me on my butt," he said.

Another neighbor said free firewood is available at his place. The storm blew over hundreds of trees like they were toothpicks. Volunteers and strangers even helped him with his efforts.

"Came by and looked at this devastation and pulled in and sparked up the saw, and just started cutting," he said. "I don't even know whose house it is, all I know is one guy walked up and said 'Thanks.'"

The family's dog "Saber" is home. It's believed the tornado blew the yellow lab down the road. Neighbors found him later, hurt but alive.

"In the grand scheme of things, you can't replace your dog. Everything else is replaceable," said Dana Parrish, the dog's owner.
