Gustav May Cause Change Of Plans For RNC
(WCCO)
It seems strange that a tropical storm 1,500 miles away could have a direct impact on the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. The reality is, Hurricane Gustav is heading for the Gulf Coast and that could keep a lot of Republicans away from St. Paul.
"We are concerned about the delegates. We don't want them to have to leave their homes and come to the convention as a hurricane is coming in their direction," said Melissa Subbotin of the RNC.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, a scheduled speaker at the RNC, has already said he will not attend the convention if Hurricane Gustav hits his home state over the weekend. President Bush is also scheduled to speak Monday, but there is talk that a 'Katrina-like' storm could alter his schedule.
Political analyst Larry Jacobs said the Republican Party is in a tough situation. They need a good showing in St. Paul after a successful Democratic Convention in Denver. At the same time they can't ignore a potentially devastating hurricane.
"The Republican Party is still smarting after what was seen as neglect after Katrina," said Jacobs.
If the storm hits, Jacobs does expect a quick government response.
"Katrina, and what was seen as ... the drowning of New Orleans, is something that John McCain has talked about and said he will never let that happen again. So, I think that Republicans have to show the love for that region, but I think the show goes on," said Jacobs.
RNC leaders said no matter what happens with Gustav, the convention will go on as planned next week. Subbotin said they have a contingency plan for speakers just in case some are unable to come.
