Family Returns From Trip To Find Home Destroyed

HUGO, Minn. (WCCO) ― Homeowners in Hugo were allowed back into their homes at around 1 p.m. Monday afternoon. For some, not knowing what they would find was the hardest part.

One family went away for the weekend with no idea they'd have nothing to come home to.

The Grahn family was at a cabin 2 and 1/2 hours away when they got the call.

"Just said, 'The tornado went through Hugo and you don't have a house, your house is totally gone.' We couldn't believe it," said Terri Grahn.

After an agonizing wait, the family got their first look Monday afternoon at what had been their home.

"It was just unreal to see that we didn't have anything left. And just have a pattern how our house was totally gone, and two houses down, you know, just the freakiness of it," said Grahn.

After the storm, much of the Grahn's home including the kids' bedrooms had blown across the street. Friends and neighbors flocked to help pick through the rubble.

"I live in the neighborhood, and these guys are some of our best friends, and you know they've lost everything, so we just want to do what we can to help," said Kari Munson.

They searched for a wedding ring and other mementos. With each discovery, a piece of their lives as a whole is returned.

"It's unbelievable how many pictures we have found. We just have to find a place that can restore them or make them better," said Grahn. "I'm so glad we weren't here."
