Flood Protection Plan Needed For Fargo Area

FARGO, N.D. (AP) ― The Corps of Engineers says officials must work quickly to come up with a flood protection plan for the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Engineer Craig Evans told the Metropolitan Flood Management Work Group during its first meeting Wednesday that the goal is to have a plan ready for Congress by mid-January, so it can be included in the Water Resources Development Act of 2010.

He says if the deadline is missed, the metro area will have to wait at least two more years for another water act.

The Metropolitan Flood Management Work Group is tasked with deciding on a flood protection plan that meets federal standards and local needs.

Officials say a priority is getting the federal government to count the full economic impact of major floods in Fargo-Moorhead, so as much federal money as possible is available.

The corps is studying several flood-protection options, including a $909 million diversion of the Red River through Minnesota, a $625 million levee plan and a diversion through North Dakota.
