Fargo officials are borrowing expertise from Louisiana.
The National Guard and the city plan to bring in seven miles of 4-feet high interlocking plastic containers that can be filled with sand and used for temporary dikes.
City officials say the system was used during Hurricane Katrina.
Fargo administrator Pat Zavoral says it's collapsable and easy to move.
Zavoral estimates the city is about 40 percent protected from a 40-foot river crest.
