Hot Winds Put Twin Cities In 'Extreme' Fire Danger

(WCCO) Most of the Twin Cities metropolitan area is under an extreme risk for fires due to hot, windy conditions, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

The National Weather Service has also issued a red flag warning for a number of counties in central Minnesota in a swath that also includes Anoka and Sherburne counties.

The red flag warning in the Anoka-Sherburne area was issued at 10 a.m. and is in effect until 7 p.m.

Because of the extreme heat and high winds, and as dew points are in the upper 40s, the NWS predicts that humidity could drop to 20 to 25 percent.

Right now, the Minnesota DNR has 11 counties in the Twin Cities area -- including Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, Dakota, Wright, Anoka, Carver, Sherburne, Isanti, Chisago and Washington counties -- listed as being in "extreme" danger of fires.

That designation means, according to the DNR, that "the fire situation is explosive and can result in extensive property damage." Current conditions exist that would make it easy for a large fire to spark and spread.
