Police See Uptick In Crime After Iowa Flooding

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) ― The flood waters have receded and now Cedar Rapids officials are dealing with a rash of burglaries.

Very little crime was reported during floods earlier this month that drenched hundreds of blocks in Cedar Rapids. But now, says Cedar Rapids police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin, "People are starting the stupid stuff."

According to police reports, the office of Horizons, a nonprofit that provides Meals on Wheels services, was robbed this week. Other recently filed theft reports include $26,000 worth of clothing, jewelry shoes and memorabilia from Roy Marble's City Style Clothing, $50,000 in computer equipment from First Union Securities and $13,240 in goods and cash from a home on Cedar Rapids' northeast side.

Nearly 10 other larcenies have been reported in flooded areas, including the theft of two headstones.
