Meteorologists say the mixture of warm air temperatures near the ground and cooler air higher up was a combustible combination that produced two deadly storms Sunday.
Air temperatures reached into the 80s today in a significant warmup during a cool spring. National Weather Service Meteorologist Todd Krause says the air above remained cooler, creating an unstable atmosphere.
The result was a tornado confirmed in Coon Rapids and another reported in Hugo that killed one child and injured at least eight others.
Krause says the two storms also packed large hail that did significant damage to homes, windows and car windshields.
