Restaurant That Inspired 'Soup Nazi' Opens In MN
(WCCO)
Ready for a
laugh and a hearty bowl of soup? You'll get both at a new local restaurant.
You may
recognize the restaurant idea from the television show "Seinfeld." It's called Soup Man.
The original
one is in New York City
and was started by Al Yeganeh. He's known as the Soup Nazi in the "Seinfeld"
episode.
"No
soup for you," he shouted at a character in the show during one episode.
The local Soup
Nazi is really no Soup Nazi at all. He's got Minnesota roots and shows "Minnesota Nice"
to his customers.
"Well, I'd
guess I'd be the Soup Man, here," Mike Barr said.
He's a Minneapolis entrepreneur
who opened Soup Man Tuesday for a
lunch crowd. He thinks he's got the recipe for success in Minnesota.
"It is cold
here, and when it's 25 below in the middle of winter, what do you want? You
want soup," Barr said.
On one of
the hottest days of the year, folks waited for up to 30 minutes before Soup Man
opened Tuesday.
It's in Capella Tower,
which is the Minneapolis
skyscraper with the halo on top, at 225
South 6th Street downtown.
"This
is huge! This is big for this area,"
remarked one downtown worker who stood in line to try the famous soup.
Lobster
Bisque is the most popular. There are several other kinds of hearty soups,
along with sandwiches and salads.
Mike will always
serve you. He'll never turn you away like the Soup Nazi. He'll even give you a
good laugh with his best Soup Nazi impression.
