A Boulder, Colo. woman charged with dyeing her poodle pink will have to wait for her day in court. Joy Douglas asked a judge Tuesday morning to reschedule her hearing after she hired an attorney.
Douglas, a hair stylist, said she colored Cici, her white poodle, pink to help raise awareness about breast cancer. Authorities in Boulder said she has gone too far and the coloring could cost her $1,000.
Douglas is charged with violating a city ordinance that prohibits the coloring or dyeing of animals. It was passed several years ago to discourage families from dyeing rabbits and chicks for Easter.
Lisa Pedersen, director of Boulder Animal Control, said she's received complaints and they've warned Douglas several times. She was ticketed March 1.
Douglas is certain the pink stain doesn't harm Cici: She used organic beet juice.
"Regardless of what she used on the dog, the ordinance is in place and we are commissioned by the city to enforce those ordinances," said Pedersen. "We are just doing our job."
Supporters of Douglas showed up outside the courthouse Tuesday morning for a rally before the 8:30 a.m. court appearance.
Douglas took Cici with her Tuesday but had to leave her outside the courthouse.
A judge rescheduled her hearing for April 7.
