Hunter Saves Another Stuck In Chest-Deep Mud

ORROCK, Minn. (WCCO) ― A hunter is credited for saving another hunter who was stuck in mud up to his chest on the opening day of deer season.

According to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office, Peter Schmidt of Orrock Township was hunting in an area near his home around 9 a.m. Saturday when he heard someone calling for help.

Schmidt was able to find the man, Matthew Capko of Big Lake, stuck in a slough with muddy water up to his chest and unable to move. Schmidt called authorities and his family to help remove Capko.

Rescue crews were able to get a life line to Capko, who was pulled to safety and then transported to a local hospital to be treated for hypothermia. Schmidt was also sent to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia because he tried to rescue Capko before authorities arrived.

Rescue personnel believe Capko was in the water for at least an hour and if Schmidt had not found Capko, the results would have been very different.
