Faribault May Turn Street Into Ice Rink

FARIBAULT, Minn. (AP) ― It's usually a bad thing when someone says the street is like an ice rink.

But in Faribault, an attorney is proposing to purposely freeze a street for eight days -- to create a downtown ice skating attraction in the dead of winter.

James Chatto wants to close the 300 block of Central Avenue starting Jan. 25 to create a temporary ice rink and host ice sculptures.

He says the rink would take three days to build and be open by Jan. 29, leaving four days for ice skating. He hopes the idea will draw people downtown and boost slow winter sales.

Not everyone is sure of the proposal. JavaLive! coffee shop owner Ken Beck says he's torn: the ice rink could be kind of cool, but it could also inconvenience his regular customers.
