SE Minn. Family Finds Live Grenade In New Home

RED WING, Minn. (AP) ― A family moving into their new home in southeastern Minnesota was greeted by a live grenade.

Kari Erickson and her family were clearing out items left behind by the previous resident at the home in Cannon Falls Township when they found the grenade in a desk.

Erickson says her first thought was that it wasn't the real thing. But after a closer inspection and thinking of her children, she decided the device shouldn't be touched.

The Ericksons called the Goodhue County sheriff's office, which then called the bomb squad from the Twin Cities suburb of Bloomington.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff's department says the grenade was taken to a nearby quarry and detonated.

Erickson says it appears the grenade had been a keepsake of the former resident's late husband who reportedly got it in Vietnam.
