Family's Lost Dog Found, But Up For Ransom

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS) ― A family said their dog was kidnapped and is being held for ransom for a price they cannot afford to pay.

"We just want our dog back and we miss her a lot," said Kelly Myers, Tinkerbell's owner.

Tinkerbell took off last Saturday, chasing a car down the street. That's when a neighbor saw a stranger snatch her up.

"He never turned around (and) and he had no intention to turn around to find the owner of the dog," said a neighbor.

The alleged kidnapper called the dog's owner Friday morning. But when Myers thanked the male caller and offered him a $50 reward, he demanded $200.

"I just couldn't believe it. I was honestly shocked that someone could do that. We love our pets like we love our children," Myers said.

Worried for her dog's safety, she called the Sheriff's Department, but they told her it was a civil matter.

CBS station KOVR-TV called the sheriff's department and was told that it is in fact a crime to steal a pet and demand money.
