Concrete Animal Statues Stolen From Barnyard

EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. (AP) ― Authorities in East Grand Forks, Minn. are looking for the scoundrels who ran off with a bunch of barnyard animal statues.

Police say the thieves left a life-sized elk statue on its side Tuesday and stole a bear cub and five chickens made of concrete. The statues were part of a display celebrating Minnesota's 150th birthday.

"It's just mean-spirited," Mayor Lynn Stauss said, "especially when you try to create something for families and kids to look at and take pictures with."

During its next meeting, the City Council will consider offering a $500 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest. Police say total damages are estimated at up to $2,000.

Two of the chicken statues were found later Tuesday, though one had been decapitated and the other was damaged. A University of North Dakota student told the Grand Forks Herald that they had been placed in the middle of the road and she had inadvertently driven over them.
