Fares Proposed For New Northstar Line

ST. PAUL (AP) ― The Metropolitan Council will hold hearings next month on proposed fares for the new Northstar commuter rail line.

The 40-mile line will provide service on a segment of existing track from Big Lake to downtown Minneapolis. It's set to open in late 2009.

The Met Council's Transportation Committee has approved proposed fares that are priced according to a tier system, based on the distance away from downtown Minneapolis. From Big Lake, the proposed weekday cash fare -- one-way to downtown Minneapolis -- would be $7.50. From Fridley to downtown Minneapolis, it would be $3.25.

For customers not traveling to downtown, the proposed fare would be $3.25 between stations.

Public hearings on the proposed fares will be held October 15th at the Minneapolis Central Library and at the Anoka County Government Center and October 23rd at the Sherburne County Government Center.
