Good To Know: Mass Transit's Time Has Come
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ―
There is good news Wednesday night on the transportation front. Figures are in on mass transit use in the state, and they are enlightening and heartening. Don says he's seen changes he thought he'd never see.
When the idea of light rail transit was first put forward in Minnesota, the outcry was immediate and nasty.
People who loved roads and cars were pitted against those who thought a big-time metropolis like Minneapolis and St. Paul ought to act like one.
Now we have the Hiawatha Line, the North Star corridor about to become operational and the Central Corridor is moving along its bumpy way. And bus service continues to prosper.
Here are the numbers released today. In 2008, Minnesotans saved 39 million gallons of gasoline by riding mass transit in record numbers.
That is the amount of fuel consumed by 67,000 cars.
For those of you who believe the science, the fuel savings cut Minnesota greenhouse gas emissions by 352,000 tons.
Mass transit is an idea whose time has come. Well, it actually came a long time ago.
