Loonie's Strength Sends Canadian Shoppers South

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) ― Canada's loonie is once again approaching par with the U.S. dollar, and motels, restaurants and retail stores in Grand Forks are expecting a busy weekend.

The situation is similar to two years ago when the Canadian dollar hit par, creating a huge difference between American and Canadian prices on books, clothes, electronics and cars.

Grand Forks City Council President and Airport Authority member Hal Gershman says the loonie's strength also should mean good ridership for Allegiant Air's Grand Forks flights to Phoenix and Las Vegas.

The shopping rush could add to the demand on hotel space in Grand Forks. Hotels are filling up already with hockey fans in town for the two-game series between the University of North Dakota and University of Minnesota.
