Zebra mussels have been found in three Ramsey County lakes that supply water to St. Paul's water system.
The invasive mussels were found in Vadnais, Sucker and Pleasant Lakes, and in the canals joining them, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said Friday.
While the lakes are part of a system that serves over 400,000 people, officials said the zebra mussels won't affect the quality of the drinking water.
However, they can clog intake pipes and may increase maintenance expenses.
Officials said it's not clear whether the invaders entered St. Paul's system by water pumped from the Mississippi River or from boaters or anglers who brought them into the lakes by accident.
The DNR said at least 29 Minnesota water bodies and wetlands are infested with zebra mussels.
