Minn. Energy Activists To Fight S.D. Coal Plant

St. Paul (AP) ― Activists will try to stop a proposed South Dakota power plant by urging Minnesota regulators to reject new power lines for the project.

The coal-fired Big Stone II plant is planned to be built next to the existing Big Stone plant near Milbank, S.D., near the Minnesota state line.

Under the plan, new or upgraded transmission lines need to be erected in Minnesota in order to distribute electricity into the utility's power grid.

Energy and environmental groups said they will urge Minnesota utility regulators to deny approval for the new lines. Project opponents claim the new energy isn't needed and that wind or other power options should be explored first.

Seven utilities want to build the $1.6 billion plant to meet the region's growing power needs.

An administrative law judge will hear arguments over the next couple of weeks, then prepare a recommendation for the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. MPUC is expected to make a decision in March 2007.
