Charge: Sleepy Eye Teacher Had Sex With Student

NEW ULM, Minn. (AP) ― A 47-year-old teacher at Sleepy Eye high school has been charged with having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

Brown County prosecutors filed third-degree criminal sexual conduct charges against English teacher Calvin Clifford Collum II of New Ulm.

A working telephone number could not be found for Collum on Friday.

The complaint filed Thursday alleges the relationship lasted from Feb. 1 to March 10. Police say the girl admits she had sex with the teacher at his house in the past two weeks.

Police became involved after a resident tipped them to the relationship. Prosecutors say the school has suspended Collum.

He made his first court appearance on Thursday, when conditional bail was set at $25,000. He later bailed out of jail.
