Tax Committee To Vote Monday On Stadiums
St. Paul (AP) ―
After meeting off-and-on since Thursday to discuss stadium plans for the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, the Senate Tax Committee is scheduled to vote on Monday.
Committee Chairman Larry Pogemiller, DFL-Minneapolis, advised members Sunday evening that they would vote on sales taxes that would pay for each stadium. A hearing is tentatively scheduled for 2:30 p.m., but it is expected to stretch into the evening.
A Twins plan that passed the House would allow Hennepin County to enact a 0.15 percent sales tax to pay three-fourths of a $522 million ballpark in Minneapolis. It wouldn't be subject to a voter referendum as local sales taxes require.
Another proposal -- putting a 0.5 percent sales tax on all of the seven-county metropolitan area -- is on the table in the Senate committee. It would pay for the Twins and Vikings stadiums, and generate money for transit projects.
A third bill, committing state dollars to a new University of Minnesota football stadium is stuck in the Senate Tax Committee, stalling on 6-6 votes Thursday and Friday.
