EPA to Update South Mpls. On Arsenic Cleanup

Minneapolis (AP) ― The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency holds a meeting tonight to give south Minneapolis residents an update on the cleanup of arsenic from a former pesticide plant.

Federal environmental officials are about halfway through cleaning up the yards contaminated with arsenic from the former plant (near the intersection of 28th Street and Hiawatha Avenue).

Contractors for the EPA have removed and replaced yards and garden beds at 101 properties during the past three years. There was no cost to the property owners.

EPA on-site coordinator Sonia Vega says the goal is to clean another 97 properties during the next two years.

She says the goal is to lower the health risk to children.

Tuesday's neighborhood meeting takes place at the Midtown YWCA on East Lake Street.
