The man who went to prison for killing Minnesota Timberwolves guard Malik Sealy while driving drunk six years ago was sentenced to a year in the workhouse for another drunk driving offense.
Souksangouane Phengsene, 50, pleaded guilty Nov. 8 to a single count of felony DWI in Hennepin County District Court after being pulled over in October with a blood-alcohol content of 0.21 percent, more than twice the legal limit for drivers in Minnesota. The charge was a felony rather than a misdemeanor because of his prior convictions.
In 2000, Phengsene was traveling the wrong way on Highway 100 in St. Louis Park when his vehicle slammed head-on into Sealy's vehicle. He pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide and was sentenced in October of that year to four years in prison. Phengsene also was convicted of drunken driving in 1997 in Des Moines, Iowa.
In the current case, District Judge Warren Sagstuen gave Phengsene a six-year term but stayed the sentence and ordered him to the workhouse. Phengsene also must attend chemical-dependency classes and keep a job.
The sentence conformed with state sentencing guidelines.
