U's Solar-Powered Car To Compete In Race

Minneapolis (AP) ― A solar-powered car from the University of Minnesota will be competing in a 2,500-mile race from Austin, Texas, to Calgary, Canada, this weekend.

Forty-six undergraduate students assembled Borealis Three.

The car's predecessor, Borealis Second, took second place in the last North American Solar Challenge, held in 2003.

Borealis Third incorporates solar cells like those in NASA's Mars rovers, motors like those in hydrogen-powered cars and composite materials like those in fighter jets.

It's expected to travel at 65 miles an hour solely on solar power.

The car took first place in the 2005 Formula Sun competition in May.
