The Minnesota School Boards Association said 91 districts now plan to go to their voters with operating levy referendums this year, making it the second-highest number of districts ever.
The association said it surveyed 341 districts and got responses from 297 of them. The 91 districts could increase or decrease by Sept. 14, the deadline for making a decision on referendums.
The association said many districts will go to their voters because a 1 percent increase in state spending for schools doesn't keep up with inflation, and districts don't want to make budget cuts.
Also, some districts are simply renewing past levies that are expiring.
For comparison, the 91 districts are about half of the 188 districts that had levy referendums in 2001.
