Police: People Braking For Red Lights
Minneapolis (WCCO) ―
Since the City of Minneapolis has installed "Photo Cop" cameras at a dozen intersections this summer, police said more drivers have been braking for red lights.
During the first three weeks in August, cameras caught 5,600 red-light runners. During the same three weeks in September, the number dropped to 3,600, a 35 percent drop.
"People are slowing down, they are stopping (and) not crashing into each other and that's what we wanted to change," explained Lt. Greg Reinhardt with the Minneapolis Police Department.
Since the camera program started, the "Photo Cops" have caught about 20,000 drivers. Police ticketed about 12,000 of those drivers, after officials decided the photos were clear enough.
Red light tickets cost $142.
