Minneapolis To Appeal 'Photo Cop' Ruling
Minneapolis (WCCO) ―
The city of Minneapolis said Monday it will appeal a judge's decision that shut down the city's "photo cop" cameras.
Last week, a Hennepin County judge struck down the ordinance that authorized the program, so the city shut down the automated cameras that were used to ticket red light-running drivers.
Under the "Stop on Red" program that was quickly dubbed "photo cop", police ticketed the owner of the car, regardless of who was driving. That was a fatal defect, Hennepin County District Judge Mark Wernick ruled.
The city said it will file a brief to the court within the next 15 days, making its argument that the ordinance is constitutional.
Cameras were installed at 12 intersections in July. Motorists were warned with signs at the intersections and the police department posted a list of "photo cop-enforced" intersections on its Web site.
