The Minnesota Twins home opener against the Baltimore Orioles has people thinking about what baseball would be like outdoors and what the latest progress is on the new Twins stadium.
In May 21, 2006 lawmakers passed the Twins Stadium Bill with the majority of the $522 million price tag being paid for by a sales tax hike in Hennepin County.
People are hopeful that the Twins will be playing in an outdoor ball park in the stadium by 2010. However, people are waiting on the owners, the county, the Twins and others to figure out when the construction on the new stadium will begin.
Hennepin County does not own the land yet and they haven't decided where the railroad track that runs through the site will go.
"These are final details and they might seem minor after all that we've gone through but whatever you agree to now, you have to live with for 30 years. So we're taking some time to make sure we do it right," said Hennepin County Commissioner Mike Opat.
The original plan was to clear the parking lot where the new stadium will be located by now. Plans are changing to May and the pilings have to be in the ground by August to stay on schedule.
"In any large construction project, there's pad built in. Now granted, we are eating into some of that right now. But we're still confident that we'll open in 2010 on time and on budget," said Minnesota Twins spokesperson Kevin Smith.
