The search for a Minnesota writer with the right verse is on.
The Minnesota Humanities Center is looking to fill the honorary post of poet laureate, a job created by the state Legislature last spring against the wishes of Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
In 2005, Pawlenty vetoed a bill to designate an official poet whose job would include appearing at ceremonies and state celebrations and getting students excited about poetry. Lawmakers tucked the provision in a broader bill last session, making it tough for Pawlenty to block.
Nominations and applications are being accepted through the end of the month. A committee plans to forward recommendations to Pawlenty in December.
Eligible nominees must have lived in the state for at least a year, be at least 21 years old and have a proven poetry background.
