Finding Minnesota: Frog Creek Pottery
by Jeanette Trompeter
Cannon Falls, Minn. (WCCO) ―
Frog Creek Pottery is another example of how some of the best spots are found off the beaten path. Nestled in a beautiful spread of countryside in Cannon Falls, Minn. stopping here should not be rushed.
In the showroom there are all kinds of pieces created by artist Lisa Dolezal.
"People love the faces," said Dolezal. She started playing with clay 16 years ago.
Her first attempt at the wheel was a little rough, so she sculpted the face of her mother, and hid the imperfections of her bowl with that image surrounded in leaves. She eventually mastered the wheel as well and today makes hundreds of the mystical looking masterpieces a year.
"I just love it. I make money playing in the mud," said Dolezal.
When people walk into the store, they'll find her doing just that.
"And if you want to you can sit down at the wheel and try it," said Dolezal.
Dolezal calls the faces she puts on many of her pieces "sprites". They're said to bring peace and harmony, something people will find plenty of at Frog Creek Pottery.
A visit should not be limited to the showroom and studio. There is a whimsical garden that Dolezal started as a tribute to her father when he died six years ago. Her pottery is hidden among the flowers, so people can actually do some shopping in the garden.
Frog Creek Pottery is also a place for kids who can help shop or can spend their time hiding behind the magic doors of the play area.
"I want them to leave here with a little lighter heart than they arrived with," said Dolezal.
Frog Creek Pottery is open seven days a week and Dolezal also offers classes.
