Nurse Celebrates 75 Years On The Job
by Amelia Santaniello
(WCCO)
Imagine working at the same place for more than 75 years. Eleanor Jahnke, a former nurse and volunteer at Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital is celebrating her diamond anniversary.
"I started out as a student nurse on Feb. 1, 1932 and graduated in '35," said Jahnke.
Jahnke, 95, has spent most of her life working at Bethesda Hospital. She retired as nurse in 1977 -- but continued to volunteer at the hospital.
The St. Paul native said it's the people who work there that keep her coming back.
"When people are good to you -- you try to be good to them," said Jahnke.
Her co-workers said it's the other way around.
"Eleanor's loyalty is just beyond belief and the amount of work and dedication that she has given to Bethesda Hospital for 75 years is just remarkable," said Dr. Frank Indihar, CEO medical director of Bethesda Hospital.
"She brings a lot to our department. She comes in and takes over, she wants her job and she wants it waiting for her," said Pat Grans, director of volunteers at Bethesda Hospital.
"I hope I can keep on -- I'm not planning on retiring from volunteering," said Jahnke.
Eleanor Jahnke said she keeps going because she would get bored at home.
