State Starts Green Certification For Home Building

Minneapolis (AP) ― Minnesota is joining a handful of states in starting a green certification program for new and remodeled houses.

Minnesota GreenStar is a new set of standards aimed at increasing durability, energy efficiency and indoor air quality. MPCA commissioner Brad Moore praised the program and says it will "create a sea change for Minnesota."

The program was created with the help of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, the Minnesota chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and the Minneapolis-based Green Institute.

It is voluntary and will have different criteria depending on the type of project. For instance, the standards for new construction will be different from those for a remodeling project.
