It's never been done before, but a Minnesota police dog from Mower County is trying to win a national K-9 competition for the fifth time in a row.
Tazer has been called a nearly flawless K-9. He and 130 other police dogs are competing in St. Paul for a national title.
A shepherd named Elvis absolutely nails the hurdles. In test after flawless test, you'd never know this Minneapolis K-9 is a rookie. Elvis is out to prove a first-timer can succeed. Meanwhile, another dog named Ollie traveled from New York City with a special motivation.
"From my neighborhood alone, from my area we had 75 people that were killed in the World Trade Center," said Ollie's partner officer Patrick Carolan, who now patrols the commuter lines. Testing Ollie in obedience is good training for a team that searches for explosives in Manhattan.
"If someone leaves a bag down, they call us. Then it's considered an unattended bag and we'll check it," said Carolan.
Ollie's nose makes him special. Other dogs can brag about collaring bad guys. All K-9s have one thing in common: they relish earning rewards and praise in competition and in the line of duty, which is why they work as hard as they do as members of the police force.
If you'd like to see these incredible dogs in action, there's a free demonstration on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. at Midway Stadium in St. Paul.
