Rochester, Minn. (AP) ― Former conjoined twins Abbigail and Isabelle Carlsen have been moved out of intensive care and are now eating from bottles, their father said.

The 5-month-old twins have been moved into the general pediatrics unit at Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Digesting with their reconstructed bowels hurts a bit, so they have been fussy, said their father, Jesse Carlsen.

"It's nerve-racking," he said. But doctors said the discomfort should go away within a couple of days.

Jesse and his wife, Amy, have been walking with the girls around the hospital hallways in a wagon -- one of the twins' favorite activities.

Doctors expect they will return home to Fargo, N.D., sometime in June.

The twins, born in late November in Minneapolis, were connected at the abdomen and shared several organs, including their livers, pancreas and bowels. They were separated May 12 and have been making consistent improvement since then.
