Conjoined Twins' Surgery Set For May

Fargo, N.D. (AP) ― Fargo, N.D. conjoined twins Abby and Belle Carlsen are expected to have their separation surgery in mid-May.

They're preparing for it at the Mayo Clinic's children's hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Doctors say the timing of the surgery depends on staff schedules and the availability of operating rooms, and the twins' health is not pushing it back. They were born last November.

The girls will be at the clinic until the surgery. Doctors have injected saline into pouches to stretch their skin and prepare for it.

-------

According to the Mayo Clinic, conjoined twins are extremely rare, occurring once in every 200,000 births.
