Today's Lesson: Dressing For Cold Weather
by Jeanette Trompeter
Inver Grove Heights, Minn. (WCCO) ―
If you haven't lived in Minnesota very long, winter could be a cultural shock.
Students at Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy in Inver Grove Heights, Minn. were eager to play outside before the snow set in. That's bound to change -- fast.
Most of the academy's students are used to warmer climates, so they need to be reminded on what to wear in the winter.
"Does everyone have boots now that fit their feet?" a teacher asked a class full of students.
"You wear a hat, a jacket, some gloves to keep your hands warm, and some boots," one boy said.
"You should bring snow pants and stuff, so your pants don't get wet," one girl said.
"You can bring hand-warmers," another girl said.
One fifth-grader knew firsthand what can happen if you're not dressed for winter.
"Once I went outside with tennis shoes and I didn't get adapted to the winter," the girl said. "My legs were freezing, and then when I went home I put them inside hot water."
Fourth-graders drew a poster to teach younger students how to prepare for winter.
"We drew mittens and snow pants," one boy said.
"I drew the earmuffs and the hat," one girl said.
"I drew a scarf," another boy said.
The students also wrote their own book about staying warm.
"You need a hat to keep your head warm from the cold," one student read.
"You need earmuffs to keep your ears warm," another read.
Some students said they couldn't wait to put on their winter gear and experience snow for the first time.
"It's going to be exciting and cold," one student said. "I like the cold."
