Student's Hat Found; Family Calls Off Search
St. Cloud, Minn. (AP) ―
The family of St. Cloud State student Scot Radel has called off the search for the missing 21-year-old from Owatonna, Minn. after his hat was found in the Mississippi River.
The student's father, Allan Radel, confirmed that the baseball hat found in the river matched the North Carolina Tar Heels cap worn by his son when he disappeared nearly two weeks ago.
The father says now the scope of their search will change from finding the man to looking for a body.
St. Cloud Police Chief Dennis Ballentine says he's confident Radel's body is in the river, but the search with an underwater camera has been called off because of unsafe ice.
Ballentine says the river search likely won't resume until spring
Allan Radel says investigations into how his son fell into the river will continue. Radel says he believes Scot was the victim of foul play.
Scot Radel was last heard from when he called friends after leaving a St. Cloud, Minn. bar on the night of Feb. 2.
A campus rally scheduled today for Radel's family has been canceled, now that the focus of the search is on finding his body.
